Wire-Free Robot Mowers — The 2026 RTK + LiDAR Roundup
Wire-free robot mowers map your lawn boundaries with satellite GPS, lasers, or cameras instead of an underground perimeter wire. The category started taking off in 2023; by 2026 it spans nine models in our spec database across five brands and three navigation methods. This guide collates them.
For the broader explainer on how each navigation method works, see RTK GPS vs Perimeter Wire vs LiDAR. This page is the buyer-facing roundup of the wire-free options currently on the market.
The wire-free shortlist (9 models)

| Husqvarna Automower 450X EPOS | RTK | 10,117 sqm | 45% |
Eleven entries from the 20-mower database meet the wire-free criterion. The Husqvarna 415X, 435X AWD, Worx Landroid M/L, Robomow RK, STIHL iMOW, and Gardena Sileno still use perimeter wire and are not included here.
RTK satellite — the dominant wire-free method
Real-Time Kinematic GPS pairs the mower's onboard receiver with a fixed antenna ("base station") at the property to deliver centimetre-level accuracy. Most wire-free mowers in the database use RTK as the primary boundary method — the Navimow H-series, the Mammotion LUBA 2, the Husqvarna EPOS line, and the Ecovacs A1600 all sit in this category. RTK requires clear sky view from both the base station and the mower; satellite signal degrades under heavy tree canopy, near tall buildings, and in some weather conditions.
RTK strengths
- 30 to 60 minute setup — walk the boundary once with the mower, then save the map.
- Multi-zone capable. Most RTK platforms support multiple cutting areas without extra wire installs.
- Easy reconfiguration. Garden bed added? Drag the virtual boundary in the app.
RTK weaknesses
- Tree canopy and building proximity can cause signal dropouts.
- Requires Wi-Fi at the dock for the base station.
- Higher minimum cost — entry-tier RTK (Navimow i110) sits a price tier above entry wire (Gardena Sileno flex).
LiDAR — works under canopy
LiDAR-equipped mowers map the environment with rotating laser sensors. The technology is not satellite-dependent, which means it works under tree canopy where RTK signal degrades. LiDAR is paired with optical cameras on most consumer units to detect dynamic obstacles (kids, pets, deliveries) in real time. The Worx Landroid Vision WR213, Mammotion YUKA Mini 2, and Ecovacs Goat A3000 LiDAR are the pure-LiDAR options in the database.
LiDAR strengths
- Works under heavy tree canopy where RTK is unreliable.
- Live obstacle detection — sees moving objects without manual no-go zone setup.
- Detects irregular boundaries (garden beds, paths, garden art) at the sensor level.
LiDAR weaknesses
- Higher absolute cost. The cheapest LiDAR mower in the database is the YUKA Mini 2.
- Sensor maintenance — wet leaves and pollen can degrade lidar performance until cleaned.
- Less mature platform; brand-side service infrastructure is still developing across most LiDAR vendors.
Hybrid systems — RTK + LiDAR + vision
Hybrid systems combine multiple navigation methods so the mower can fall back from one to another when conditions change. The Mammotion LUBA 3 (RTK + LiDAR + vision) and Ecovacs Goat A1600 RTK (RTK + LiDAR + vision) are the two true hybrid units in our database. Husqvarna's EPOS platform technically combines RTK with optional wire fallback, putting it in a separate hybrid category.
Hybrid mowers are the most expensive tier within wire-free, but for properties with mixed conditions — open lawn in front, heavy tree canopy in back — they're the most reliable choice because the navigation stack adapts as the mower moves between zones.
How to choose between wire-free options
| If your yard is... | Pick |
|---|---|
| Small, flat, open sky, budget priority | Segway Navimow i110 |
| Medium, moderate slope, open sky | Navimow H800-VF or H1500-VF |
| Medium, heavy tree canopy | Mammotion YUKA Mini 2 1000H (LiDAR) |
| Large, steep, open sky, budget priority | Mammotion LUBA 2 AWD 5000H |
| Large, heavy canopy, premium budget | Mammotion LUBA 3 AWD 5000 |
| Estate-tier with dealer support need | Husqvarna Automower 450X EPOS |
Use the Lawn-Fit Calculator
Filter the full database against your specific yard's size, slope, and obstacle profile with our Lawn-Fit Calculator. The tool drops mowers below your slope or coverage requirement before scoring, then ranks the qualifying wire-free and wire-guided options side by side.

FAQ
Is wire-free always better than wire?
No. Wire-guided mowers are still the most reliable choice under heavy tree canopy and for very tight or irregular gardens with sub-15cm clearances. Wire is also typically cheaper for a given coverage and slope rating. The wire-free advantage is install simplicity and easy boundary changes — not raw capability.
Will RTK work in the city?
RTK requires sky view to satellites. Tall buildings can cause partial signal blocking — sometimes called "urban canyon" effect. Suburban properties usually have enough sky view to make RTK work; dense inner-city properties with overhanging structures may degrade enough that LiDAR or hybrid systems are a safer choice.
How long does setup take?
RTK: 30–60 minutes (walk the boundary with the mower, mount the base station). LiDAR: 30–90 minutes (walk the boundary or let the unit map automatically, then refine in the app). Wire: 4–8 hours of physical work for typical yards, plus optional professional install.
Can I add wire-free zones to a wire-guided mower?
Not as a retrofit. The hardware stack is fundamentally different. Some Husqvarna EPOS units accept both RTK and wire input simultaneously, but they're sold as wire-free with optional wire for difficult zones, not as a retrofit path for older Husqvarna models.
